Our Mission:

The Wolfkeep is dedicated to the preservation of the wolf and the study of wolf behavior. Our mission is to educate the public about the wolf and its place in the ecosystem. Knowledge brings awareness, thereby promoting cooperation and responsible stewardship of a unique endangered species indigenous to Montana.

The Pack:
|
The main pack is in a beautiful ten acre enclosure, right in the center of Montana’s glacial region. There are ten wolves in the main pack; nine of them are Arctic (canis lupus arctos) originating from Ellesmere Island in the high arctic circle. The other, Shylee, is a Gray Wolf (canis lupus irremotus) who is the offspring of a captured mating pair from Montana’s vast Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. The pack originated with three: Wizzy, Sarah and Shylee. The rest (Heidi, Huggins, Muggins, Miriah, Ollie, Freya and Woody) are the offspring of the original three. Wizzy has been the Alpha Male for about ten years now, and has survived one Alpha struggle. The Alpha Female was Sarah for many years but now her daughters have beat her down and she’s low in pack status. As of now it looks like Shylee and Miriah are up for Alpha status, but there are eight females and it could go any way.

Activities:
|
The Wolfkeep offers a wide range of activities for the public to learn from and enjoy. We offer opportunities for research, photography and college internships. We are also a volunteer open organization for any one over the age of sixteen who is interested in eventually working with large canids, or just bored and looking for something to do. In the summer we set up our sweat lodge and tepees for visitors who want to spend a week or so volunteering and camping next to the wolf enclosure. We also can teach volunteers a wide variety of useful skills and trades such as flint napping, black smithing, heavy machinery operation, leather working and much more. |

Location:
|
The Wolfkeep is located in NW Montana in the beautiful Garnet Mountain Range, right across from the legendary Blackfoot River corridor. We are located right off of mile marker 11 on Highway 200, only sixteen miles from Missoula, MT. You just go east from Missoula on I-90 for five miles and take the Bonner/Highway 200 exit. Then you take Highway 200 East and take the first right after mile marker eleven. The Blackfoot River features a wide variety of other outdoor activities including: hiking, river floating, canoeing, rock climbing and some of the worlds finest trout fishing. We are only about two hours from Glacier National Park, and Highway 200 is the scenic back route from I-90 to Glacier. |
