This is our ten year old alpha male, Wizzy. Wizzy was conceived on Ellesmere Island, born in Colorado, and lived almost his entire life in Montana. He is one of only six F1 arctic wolves in captivity in the world. His last weigh-in was at about 130 pounds, and he is physically the second largest animal in the facility. He is in excellent shape and remains dominant over the rest of the pack. He is one of our original four wolves.
Wizzy is an amazing animal with a unique personality. He is by far our most human-friendly wolf; he loves meeting new people and will give smooches to almost everyone. He also likes to get scratched on his belly, and will let you rub him down for hours. Wizzy is a kind hearted animal and almost never gets aggressive, so he is more or less a big white fluffy teddy bear.
But even this gentle giant has a tough side, and he is one canid you do not want to make angry. In 2004 he displayed one of the most amazing acts of power that we ever heard of (from any species). Wizzy ate a bowling ball. No joke! The bowling ball was the only toy he ever had for more than a month, and we thought we had finally found a good one (a basketball will last seconds). His favorite game was for us to roll the bowling ball across the enclosure, and he would chase it. But then one day Carl rolled it too close and it ran over his foot. This got Wizzy rather angry so he pouted and walked away from Carl. He must have been pretty upset at the bowling ball and decided he just couldn’t let it get away with it. The next morning we went down for feeding and watering to find the bowling ball busted into three parts, with tooth marks all over it. The remains make for a great demonstration of a wolf’s crushing jaw power.
Wizzy loves human interaction and if you’re interested in meeting him, contact the Wolfkeep and ask about volunteer and internship opportunities. See the "About us" section for more information. |
